Sixth Form

Welcome! Choosing what subjects or courses to study at post 16 is a very exciting time. We want to work with you to help you achieve your full potential and set you on the road to success. This may be by going on to university, securing an apprenticeship or entering into full time employment.

Liskeard Sixth Form has an outstanding track record of success in A levels and in the Level 3 BTEC awards. We currently have students studying at many of the top universities and even in Canada. Some of our students secured apprenticeships with Babcock, Princess Yachts, Day Lewis Pharmacy and other local establishments.

Liskeard Sixth Form has an extremely positive work ethos and students enjoy being part of a smaller close-knit community. You really get to know your teachers and tutors, and they get to know you too.

The level of support and guidance we offer is second to none and is an important feature of our sixth form provision. The Sixth Form Pastoral Team are there to support you every step of the way. Your teachers are specialists in their subjects and are experienced in helping students achieve the top grades. Student progress is monitored, and relevant feedback is regularly given both to students and parents. Our friendly and adult approach towards our students helps them mature into responsible young adults. With this support and alongside the high quality teaching, we provide the working environment that encourages and motivates our students to succeed.

Sixth Form Information

We offer a wide variety of courses at A level and these are a two-year commitment with examinations at the end of year 13. Along with 3 A levels, all students complete an additional qualification. They all carry valuable UCAS points too, which are needed for university applications. These qualifications are designed to develop research skills, presentation skills or leadership skills and are complementary to the A level choice.

After the exams in the summer term, Year 12 will have a work experience week. This is an excellent chance to extend your student profile and gain valuable experience that can directly relate to your chosen career. This is very useful when applying for universities, apprenticeships or entering the workplace. For students who wish to study medicine, veterinary science or teaching, work experience is vital.

Interviews for sixth form places will be in January/February and successful candidates will receive their offers by email, which will detail their choices and entry requirements. These emails are usually sent out in March/April. Formal enrolment takes place on results day and the day after.

Students are more than welcome to pop in to the Sixth Form Office if they have a question or change their mind about a subject choice or just want some more information.

Outstanding Exam Results

Over the last couple of years, the education system has undergone a massive change with the new linear approach to exams. Our staff have supported our students throughout this time.

We are regularly ranked in the top 10% of all sixth forms nationally, with students achieving places in universities across the country including Oxford, Durham, Warwick and Edinburgh.

“Students value the strong, personalised support of staff” - Ofsted 2020

Our vocational students all achieved 100% success rate and have gone on to an apprenticeship or full time employment. We have a 99% pass rate at A level with over 50% achieving the top grades of A*, A or B.

Whatever your aspirations, we endeavour to help you achieve them.

“They (students) appreciate the high quality of education alongside the support for their wider development” - Ofsted 2020

University visits

Being able to visit universities on open days really helps students to decide on their choices. To help with this, we run trips to visit universities and open days. These include Bristol and Cardiff open days; visits to Imperial, Westminster and UCL. This year will also be visiting Oxford University.

We work in partnership with Exeter University and Marjons, facilitating contextual offers for our students where they meet the criteria. With the Exeter Scholars programme there is also the opportunity to receive a bursary award, depending on their A level results.

Careers and Work Experience

For those students who do not want to go to university we run a mixture of different workshops. These include CV writing with covering letters of introduction and mock interviews. We can put these sessions on through our links with external providers. This year Babcock International will be coming in to speak to our prospective apprentices.

We send out regular updates on apprenticeships and employment vacancies to years 12 and 13. This keeps them aware of the job market in Cornwall. We also have our own careers' advisor, who regularly sees students and will meet with them as and when needed.

Sporting Excellence

Many of our students play sport at club level. Some progress on to play at county, regional and national levels. We encourage our students to strive and be the best they can be. To support this, we adapt timetables so that training can take place as well as enabling them to go off to compete in their various sports.

Former student, Cara Collins, is currently studying at the University of Bath where she is on the England Pathway programme. Cara is loving her time at university where she is studying sports performance and is now training in top class facilities. In her first year, Cara won bronze in the British University Championships Mixed Doubles. She also won two bronze medals in the U19 National Championships in Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Cara continues to compete both nationally and internationally and we look forward to seeing her realise her dream of representing England at the Commonwealth Games in 2026!

Sixth Form in the Community

Students in Liskeard Sixth Form are encouraged to play a positive role in the local community. This can take all forms: from being the Mace bearer for the local Mayor to stewarding at local events that are open to the public.

We have also had students working in the community with adults with physical difficulties, helping out by running fun and engaging sessions at the Echo Centre, Liskeard. Students have also worked with the elderly by helping out in local residential homes.

Our students also have the opportunity to volunteer in lower school classes. This is especially beneficial for those wanting to pursue a teaching or educational career path.
