E-Safety
The internet is a fantastic place to learn, have fun and talk to friends and family. However, there are risks and everyone must make sure they know how to stay safe and protect themselves online. Here at Liskeard School, we provide students from Year 7 - 11 with a comprehensive E-Safety programme in tutorial time focusing on issues such as:
- The advantages and disadvantages of living in a digital world
- The dangers of sharing personal information online and how to stay safe
- Appropriate use of social media (Facebook; SnapChat etc)
- Cyber bullying – how to recognise it and reporting mechanisms
- Sexting – the consequences
In addition to this, the school takes part in the annual national event ‘Safer Internet Day’ which is taking place this academic year on Tuesday 6th February 2018. All students in Year 7 also complete a unit of work on E-Safety in ICT lessons resulting in the production of an advice leaflet for peers focusing on ‘Keep Safe online.’ Other subjects also make a contribution to the E-Safety programme; for example, Year 10 Photography students study image manipulation on the internet and how businesses use this to their advantage. There are regular assemblies throughout the year on topical E-Safety issues.

Below are some very useful guides for parents for internet sites regularly used by teenagers. Please take a few moments to read and digest some of the guidance for safe usage.
During tutorials, students are signposted to various respected organisations which provide comprehensive guidance and support, such as:
We also recognise that, in an ever changing digital world, parents need a helping hand in order to keep up! As a result, each year we offer an informal workshop and hands-on training session for all parents and members of the local community involved in working with children.
We also recommend a range of excellent help guides for parents produced by OFCOM. See below for their links.
- OFCOM Guide – Parental Controls for Mobile Phones
- OFCOM Guide – Parental Controls for Games
- OFCOM Guide – Parents to Protect
It is also useful to read the Department for Education's advice on Cyberbullying for Parents and Carers.
