Twelve further mathematics students from Liskeard School and Community College recently visited the University of Warwick, where they had their first real taste of university life.

We arrived and checked into our accommodation as we were staying in Halls on campus.

During the presentation of his Year 12 engineering project, Liskeard School and Community College student Will Kitto included a practical demonstration of his hydraulic log splitter in action.

Year 10 Engineering students and staff alike were very impressed with the efficiency of the machine and the high standard of design and workmanship which included many up-cycled materials.

Years 8 and 12 Arts Leaders warmed up for the Joli Vyann show at the new Circus Club which is running in the old hall at school on Thursdays from 4.30pm to 6pm. Some students went on to perform a pre-show for the public whilst others hosted and worked with ticketing and refreshments before the main show. The Arts Leaders have worked with Carne to Cove and the Liskerrett Centre to put the Joli Vyann dance show on and are looking forward to putting on more events this year.

As part of National Parliament Week, Liskeard School and Community College recently hosted a talk from a member of the House of Lords, to encourage students to become more engaged with the political and parliamentary process.

Lord Teverson met with 150 students from all year groups for a talk about the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session with students leading discussions about the bombing of Syria, the refugee crisis, Trident and the lowering of the voting age. The students were fully engaged in the discussions with many staying behind at the end to find out more from Lord Teverson.

On 6th October 2015 the A level engineering students went to Plymouth University and visited the materials laboratory to use the equipment to gain test data for their A level course work.

Students used a tensile testing machine to test how much force is required to break various metals and hence determine the yield stress and ultimate tensile stress of each material.
