Liskeard School & Community College recently welcomed local candidates to take part in a hustings event in their sixth form centre in the build up to the General Election.  Sheryll Murray of the Conservatives, Phil Hutty of the Liberal Democrats, Andrew Long from Mabyon Kernow, Martin Corney from the Green Party and Martin Menear representing Labour took part in an hour long session in the Sixth Form Common Room with students from years 10 to 13.

The session began with a five minute manifesto speech from each candidate before a question and answer session.  Head Teacher Alex Lingard said “Many students taking part in the hustings are not of voting age but all will be by the next election.  We were delighted to welcome the local candidates who helped promote the relevance of politics to our young people and the importance of voting.”

The candidates answered questions on local and national issues including housing, education and healthcare. Many students however stayed on after the hustings continuing to grill the candidates before they eventually ran out of time!

The hustings were recorded so that they can be played to all the school students over the coming days.  This will allow students to make an informed decision on their preferred candidate and vote in a mock election on the 7th May. Votes will be counted and a winner announced the day after the election.

A Sixth Form student said “It was really interesting to hear the different candidates talk. It is great as young person to feel involved in politics and feel like we matter too.”
