The OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity

At Liskeard School and Community College we are proud to deliver the bespoke vocational sports course. It is refreshing and exciting, up to date, engaging, fit for purpose and suitable for the needs of students in 2018 and beyond.

Students will gain the right combination of knowledge, understanding and skills required for the 21st century.

What’s the difference between the OCR Technical and A Level PE?

The OCR Technical Diploma is a qualification designed to prepare students for both employment and further education in the Sport and Physical Activity sector. Students will spend four days per week studying as well as conducting a one day per week work based placement. This will provide students with both a credible academic qualification as well as providing them with extensive work experience. Students will leave the Sixth Form equipped with a wide array of skills desired by employers acquired from their broad experience. For those wishing to continue onto University, the OCR Technical Diploma qualification carries the same weighting with regards to UCAS points as fellow OCR GCE A Level courses.

The course will provide learners with the opportunity to develop the core knowledge, skills and understanding required by the sport and physical activity sector and to develop further skills by completing a wide range of units through a choice of specialist pathways:

  • Sports Coaching
  • Personal Training

Why choose to study the OCR Technical at Liskeard Sixth Form?

At Liskeard Sixth Form the OCR Technical Diploma provides students with both excellent experiences and opportunities. As the qualification is equivalent to two A Levels, students have various options available to them: GCSE resits, studying for an additional A Level and partaking in various enrichment pathways. As part of the course students will complete a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing. This qualification will be obtained within the second year of the course. This provides the students with an immediate means into employment. This is a unique offer and we are proud to say we are the only Sixth Form College in South East Cornwall to offer this opportunity.

How are you assessed?

Unlike the newly reformed GCE A Levels, the OCR Technical Diploma is a qualification which suits students who are more practically minded. This is because there are a range of assessment methods for each of the 11 units. Practical evidence, videos, written reports, short exams, PowerPoint presentations, digital posters and work placements are some of the various method used to assess students’ knowledge and understanding. Therefore, if you are a student who struggles with exams then this is the course for you.

You need to have a genuine interest in sport and a good level of practical ability as well as a determined attitude and the ability to meet deadlines and work independently. It is recommended that learners have, or are working towards, a Grade 4/Grade C or above in PE, Science, Maths and English GCSEs.

  1. Learners must achieve a total of 11 units consisting of three mandatory examined units and 8 further units.
  2. Units 1, 3 and 4 are assessed by exam and marked by OCR. The 8 other units are internally assessed and moderated.
  3. The units are graded Pass, Merit and Distinction. The qualification is graded PP, PM, MM, MD, DD, DD*, D*D*
  4. D*D* provides students with 112 UCAS points. An A grade in a GCE A Level gives you 48 points.
