This course provides students with a rounded exposure to different aspects of art and design under the subject of ‘Art Textiles’. Students are encouraged to display and develop their creative abilities in order to produce visual and tactile responses.

It is preferable to have a Grade 5 or above at GCSE in Art, or Textiles, but not essential.

The 1st year of Art Textiles is broad based, creative and experimental, enabling students to have a good understanding of a variety of areas within the field of textiles. It is a period of discovery as well as skill building.

You should be open-minded and keen to try new things. Through critical studies students will develop their knowledge of artists and designers and where possible will visit museums and galleries.

The second year provides students with the opportunity to pursue personal interests. Throughout this year students will increase their skills base and work to their strengths in order to create high quality work. This course requires enthusiasm and creative thinking.

To succeed you need to be good at working independently, managing your time and meeting deadlines. You will not only develop those skills you already have but also find the opportunity to explore new areas and techniques. The course allows you to explore ideas in illustrated design and fashion drawing, printed and constructed textiles and all forms of mixed media surface pattern. Students have found that CAD/

CAM opens up a fascinating range of possibilities for producing a high level of professional finish in their design work. Other students have preferred to work in more extravagant mixed media or have even developed piece of 3-dimensional textiles.

There are four assessment objectives within Art Textiles: • Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

  • Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
  • Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
  • Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

While many students go on to follow art and design based courses in higher education, this course is by no means only for future fashion or textile designers. A Level Art Textiles offers a broad and valuable education developing aesthetic awareness, together with creative thinking.

Many previous students have made successful applications for higher education places on specialist art and design/ textiles courses at art colleges and universities. It is possible to take a wide range of degrees, in subjects as diverse as printed textiles and fashion design through to fashion photography and interior design.

2017: 100% pass rate, rated in the top 25% nationally.
