OVERVIEW

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour.

The course is an introduction to the theories and research of psychology. Students will learn the fundamentals of the subject and develop skills valued by Higher Education and employers, including critical analysis and the application of scientific methodology.

AQA have worked with the British Psychological Society to produce a clear and up-to-date specification with a coherent and holistic programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students following the course are expected to have the following grades: Separate Sciences: Grade 6 in Biology, Grade 5 in Chemistry and Physics. Science Trilogy: Grade 6. English Language Grade 6 is also required.

COURSE DETAILS

The course followed is the AQA Psychology syllabus.

AS Unit One: Social influence, Memory and Attachment.

AS Unit Two: Approaches, Psychopathology and Research Methods.

A2 Unit One: Social influence, Memory, Attachment and Psychopathology.

A2 Unit two: Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology, Research Methods and Issues and Debates in Psychology.

A2 Unit three: Options include Relationships, Schizophrenia and Aggression.

THE EXAMINATIONS

The Psychology exams are a mixture of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing.

Year 1 – two papers, 50% each, 90 minutes and 72 marks.

Year 2 – three papers, 33% each, 120 minutes and 96 marks.

There is no coursework.

FURTHER EDUCATION AND CAREERS

Psychologists put forward research findings and theories in an attempt to make predictions about human nature. Students have entered higher education courses citing psychology as both a science and a humanity subject.

RESULTS

A2 Level: 2010 - 2017: 100% Pass rate.
