The course is an introduction to the human mind and behaviour and expects students to display a variety of skills in essay writing, analysis, scientific methodology and evaluation. If you are interested in how to improve your memory, why people suffer from stress or how your childhood affects your personality, you will be interested in Psychology.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Pupils following the course are expected to gain grades B or above in English and Science (Biology) and grade C in Maths at GCSE.

 

COURSE DETAILS

The course followed is the AQA Psychology A syllabus.


AS Unit One: Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods.

AS Unit Two: Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences.  

A2 Unit One: Selection of three topics from – Biological rhythms and sleep;  Perception; Relationships; Aggression; Eating behaviour; Gender; Intelligence and learning; Cognition and development.  

A2 Unit Two: Psychopathology, Addictive Behaviour and Research Methods. 

 

THE EXAMINATIONS

Year 1 –

PSYA1 June (25% of A level)
PSYA2 June (25% of A level)

Year 2 –

PSYA3 June (25% of A level)
PSYA4 June (25% of A level)

There is no coursework in either year.

 

FURTHER EDUCATION AND CAREERS

Psychology A level is useful if you want to go into any career involving other people. Its subject is generally seen to be our behaviour and experiences.

Psychologists put forward research findings and theories in an attempt to make predictions about human nature. Students have entered higher education courses citing psychology as both a science and a humanity subject.

It is particularly useful for nursing, teaching, therapeutic work, counselling, clinical psychiatry, educational or occupational psychology.
