Year 7 students at Liskeard School & Community College were treated to a whole day off timetable this past week, spending the day looking into the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

During the day, students worked together in small groups of 4 or 5 to tackle a series of activities around the theme of ‘energy’. The first challenge was to design, make and test a wind turbine against the clock. This was followed by a challenge to design and make a drag car to see how far it could travel on a single burst of energy.

After beating Torquay Boys’ Grammar School in the previous round, Liskeard went into this game with a huge sense of belief that they could create an upset to send shockwaves throughout the country, although beating last season’s HUDL schools’ trophy winners would be no walk in the park.

Staff and students at Liskeard School & Community College were amazed by the VIVIT Experience, which visited the school to teach about the ins and outs of the anatomy.

VIVIT, which is the world’s only travelling semi-synthetic human cadaver, was used to teach students about the anatomy, physiology and pathology of various body systems. This first-hand experience presented an unparalleled opportunity to experience key areas of the curriculum beyond the classroom.

Liskeard School and Community College recently turned into the ‘School of Rock’, with an ambitious full school production of the show being performed to a delighted audience.

‘School of Rock’ was the first rock musical production that the Performing Arts team at Liskeard School had undertaken, with students from years 8 to 13 involved.

Year 8 students at Liskeard School & Community College recently promoted Cornish culture as part of the annual Liskeard Lights Up festival, by creating a Cornish language display in The Book Shop.

Community organisation Golden Tree, which promotes Cornish language and culture, asked students to get involved, and to incorporate the Cornish language into the window display. The students learnt and then wrote the words onto the ivy leaves in the display.
