In a superb finale to National Science and Engineering Week, the whole school came together to observe a rare astronomical event: The Partial Solar Eclipse. Staff and students alike were awestruck as they braved the cold and tried different techniques for viewing the eclipse including pinhole cameras, telescope projection, eclipse glasses and even welding helmets! It was wonderful to see the reactions of the students as they observed the progression of the moon across the sun; there was a real science buzz around the school. Special thanks go to Mr Willmott for resourcing the event and for providing his expertise.

“We made sixty second rockets on Wednesday. I did it with Miss Higman. We used Alka-Seltzer, water, vinegar and baking soda. Our experiments flopped severely; in five successful launches it overall reacted about 1.5 metres and overall less than 25 seconds. As Geoff Boycott would have put it – it was “roobish”! It was enjoyable.

To celebrate National Science and Engineering week the Science Department held a Great Science Bake Off. The department were blown away by the skill and creativity demonstrated by the students who entered cakes. The winning entries are shown in the picture above; Kerensa Summerfield (1st prize); Kirsty Murfin (2nd prize); Kieron Jones (3rd prize). Well done to all entries and we look forward to next year’s efforts!

Once again the Science Department at Liskeard School and Community College have embraced National Science and Engineering Week in spectacular style with their annual Science Show. This year the show was hosted by Mr Inger and the newest member of the team, Mr Trudgett. The two hour long show was dynamic and interesting and featured lots of new experiments alongside some of our regular favourites.

As part of the recent Clean Cornwall and Clean Liskeard litter pick campaign, Liskeard School and Community College students were out and about doing their bit to tidy the streets of Liskeard.

The students really entered into the spirit of things making it a competition between themselves to be the first to pick up 20 items of litter.  This activity also fitted in nicely with the school’s Co-operative values, practicing what they preach.
