Twelve further mathematics students from Liskeard School and Community College recently visited the University of Warwick, where they had their first real taste of university life.

We arrived and checked into our accommodation as we were staying in Halls on campus.

The group met at the Zeeman building, where they were met by Professor Jane Hutton and had welcome talks from Dr Ewart Shaw, from the statistics department and from Professor David Mond from mathematics. Students learned about courses that are available, as well as opportunities and careers after graduation. They were also informed about studying away from home and living independently.

The British Youth Council have acknowledged the excellent work to promote and engage students in democracy taking place at Liskeard School. Liskeard are only one of sixty schools nationally to receive the Discovering Democracy Award and the only school in Cornwall. This is in recognition of the work students have been doing in PHSCE as well as the numerous events held over the last twelve months such as a mock general election, youth parliament election and having outside speakers such as Lord Teverson, a peer in the House of Lords, come into school to speak to students. There was also an opportunity for Liskeard Sixth Form students to debate in the European Youth Parliament at Exeter County Hall.

In March, Liskeard School and Community College were delighted to host Brook Cornwall for a Health Awareness Day. The two day ‘bitesize’ event was presented to students in year 10.

Brook ran a number of different activities in the Active Learning Centre that students actively took part in. Topics were lead by the students and included information about STIs; discussions about LGBT; safe sex and not feeling pressured. The activities were interactive and engaging and students were positive and involved throughout.

The Science Department at Liskeard School recently put on their annual Science Show as part of British Science Week. The show was an experimental extravaganza lead by teachers Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett whose enthusiasm and love for their subject shone throughout the performance.

There were huge methane fireballs, exploding liquid nitrogen, elephant's toothpaste, Wotsits cooled to -189c and clock reactions to name a few of the experiments. The evening, enjoyed by a packed audience in the New Hall, fell on National Demo Day. This year the audience was also treated to the live dissection of a bull heart.

Liskeard School and Community College was awash with red and sports gear in March to raise awareness and funds for the annual fundraiser Sport Relief.

Students and staff adorned sports clothing for a donation and took part in activities across the day to raise money for this great cause. During lunch the PE department organised a dodgeball competition at Lux Park and staff challenged students to a table tennis tournament in the Sports Hall.
