In November Liskeard School & Community College was delighted to welcome back the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. The Pearl of Africa is a charity run to improve the health, education and welfare of people suffering through disease, war and poverty in Uganda. The charity is run by a board of trustees and supported by a number of volunteers across the UK.

Pearl-of-Africa-1The school had the privilege of hosting the choir two years ago to a packed hall and they were delighted to be invited back this year on their new tour of the UK.

The day began with members of the choir holding workshops with students, giving them demonstrations, inviting them to ask questions, giving them a taster of their wonderful music and teaching them to dance with them to the unique sound of the drums. Students were then given the opportunity to perform the dance at the end.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the day engaging with the choir and really got into the African spirit, performing the dance with great enthusiasm.

The choir spent the whole day at the school before preparing for the evening concert, played to a packed Old Hall at the school. Items of jewellery made by children in Uganda were being sold; some of the beautiful items were made from compressed paper using a special technique and were snapped up by staff and visitors, ideal with Christmas just around the corner!Pearl-of-Africa-8

When the concert began the audience was treated to an amazing display of colour, dancing, drums and perfect uplifting vocals. The energy from the performers was astonishing as they sang songs bursting with heritage and passion and performed dance routines. The sound generated from the drums and the strong and passionate vocals filled the room and soon had many tapping their toes and dancing.

After the interval a costume change occurred before the entertainment commenced for the second half. The instruments were brought to the front for an extravaganza of drums and dancing with the choir performing back flips with bells around their ankles.

The audience left the event thoroughly entertained and energized by the performance with the word ‘wow’ being heard by many on exit.

We would like to thank the Pearl of Africa Choir for returning to Liskeard School and putting on a fantastic performance for us and wish them well for the rest of the tour. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
