On the 22nd and 23rd October, we hosted Just Jones; a professional theatre company from London. They performed an adaptation of Ibsen’s “An Enemy of The People”, set in the fictional Cornish town of “Porth Kregg”

An-Enemy-of-the-People-2“This award winning contemporary adaptation of Ibsen’s classic is set in a close – knit community. When Dr Stockman discovers that her ethical business is contributing to de-forestation, she assumes everyone will want to put things right. Right? Wrong. The doctor, opposed by her brother the Mayor, faces a battle she can’t afford to lose. In a tense public meeting, the cast is joined by a chorus of local people and you the audience decide the outcome.”

The play was performed by professional actors including Elizabeth Elvin, Rupert Holliday Evans, Samuel Lawrence, Sarah Malin and Yana Penrose, in collaboration with students and staff from our school community and was the first time our students had performed in this way. The final performances were the result of several weeks of rehearsal, where we had the experience of working with a professional director, developing our roles within the performances.

The students involved gave fantastic performances and worked incredibly hard over several weeks, enjoying the experience of working in a professional setting and with people from different age groups.

Students involved were: Laura Cunliffe (Y9), Rose Mackonochie, Hauke Moll, Giles Potter (Y10), Deniz Aytac, Wiam Salt, Maddie O’Regan, Matt Pascoe and Jessi Mills (Y12). Performing alongside were Mrs Crawshaw and Mrs Schooling.

Many thanks also to The Cooperative Membership South West and the Arts Council for supporting this wonderful event.

Quotes from students:

Maddie O’Regan – “I liked performing the interruptions at the meeting.” “It was funny being on the same level as our teachers.” “It helped with my confidence.”

Jessi Mills – “It’s been a good experience working with professional actors and it helps with my future aspirations.”

Quotes from staff:

Richard Luscombe (publicity & web) : “The show was quite superb. A great effort by the director, actors and students involved. Watching the professional actors perform close up was a joy!”
