Thank you to everyone who took part in Jeans for Genes day this year. Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK. This year through paying £1 to wear jeans for the day and through taking part in themed science lessons we have raised £583.

This is how our money can help:

  • £10 will pay for 60 minutes of specialist telephone advice for parents caring for a child with severe neurological genetic conditions.
  • £50 will pay for a mother to attend a support day, giving her the help she needs to care for an extremely rare and profoundly disabling genetic condition.
  • £100 will help fund an educational booklet, helping teachers to maximise opportunities available to children with inherited learning disabilities.
  • £150 will pay for one child carer to enjoy a summer camp, enabling them to meet others in a similar situation, share experiences, reduce feelings of isolation and giving them some much needed fun
  • £500 will pay for five families, affected by profound disabilities, to enjoy an adaptive skiing session, where they can have fun, build confidence and friendships with others in similar situations.

Here is a message from one of our students:

Hi, my name is Kathryn Walters and I am eleven years old. I have just started in year 7 and I am loving it! I may sound normal to you, but I have acondaplayisa. Acondaplayisa is a type of dwarfism. You may have seen me around school or in the local area.

Jeans-For-Genes day helps people like me, and people with other disabilities to organise events which we can have fun doing. Last year Liskeard School raised over FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS for Jeans-For-Genes!!!

On Friday 20th September the pupils and teachers were invited to wear jeans for the day at the cost of one pound each.

The Dwarf Games are something I go to every year. They are like the Olympics. In previous years I have won six golds, one silver and four bronze. At the Dwarf Games there are twenty different sports to do., including swimming (my favourite!!!) running and throwing. I met my idol; you may have heard of her, she is called Ellie Simmonds. I even got her number!

Inside I am a very normal person, even though I look different to most people. I thank the school for participating in Jeans-For-Genes.

By Kathryn Walters (with help from one of my best friends, Holly Mutton)
