Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 10 students will be taking their end of year exams in the week beginning 27th June.  These exams mark an important step in the next twelve months leading to your son/daughter’s GCSE exams.  As teachers and tutors we will be working with students more and more about revising and how to carry out this complex and challenging activity effectively.

With this in mind, we are very fortunate to have been able to engage an expert speaker, Dr. Martijn van der Spoel, to visit us on Thursday 9th June.  Dr. van de Spool will work with students over two sessions in the morning, then with staff in the afternoon and will finally give a presentation for parents from 7-8 pm in the New Hall that evening.  Dr. van der Spoel is a chartered psychologist who specialises in explaining how to use the mind as an effective tool for life learning.  He will talk about how students can balance focus, motivation and study behaviour and ways in which parents can support this through creative and constructive guidance.  The presentation has a significant, but accessible, emphasis on the psychology behind the strategies of learning.  Examples and insights from research will be used to illustrate how you can support your child’s learning.

Dr. van der Spoel comes highly recommended by several other schools and we have used him recently and successfully with the current Year 11.  His presentation is both engaging and highly informative.  We think that this session will be really worthwhile and hope that you will be able to attend.

Yours faithfully,

James O’Connell
