Industrial Action Thursday 10th July – Liskeard is open to students

Many teachers and support staff here at Liskeard feel very strongly about the plethora of changes emanating from the Dept for Education. Whilst no-one would argue with introducing measures to raise achievement, the introduction of these changes in year are decried by staff and parents alike. It is unfair on students who have already begun their courses.

It is unfair on schools when these same measures are being used to hold schools accountable when they have had little or no notice to change their curriculum.   Staff deplore the rate of change which is affecting virtually every aspect of schools’ practice and the impact this is having on students and the education workforce as a whole. Coupled with pay and pension changes and a lack of funding to schools in real terms, this has led to a demoralisation of committed teachers and support staff who want to make a real difference to the young people they serve.

Staff here at Liskeard wanted to support the strike action to register their concerns about the impact the governments’ reforms are having on education as a whole. However, as the strike action day fell in our Challenge Week, they felt it unfair on parents who had paid months in advance for the activities and unfair to children who have been looking forward with great excitement to their chosen challenge. They wanted it to be known that their lack of strike action does not mean they are supportive of the government at this time.
