Alex-Lingard-Head-Teacher

Mr Alex Lingard BSc (Hons)
Head Teacher

I am delighted to announce that the British Council have awarded the school an award for our work on democracy. We are only 1 of 60 schools nationally to receive the Discovering Democracy Award and the only school in Cornwall. This is a recognition of the work students have been doing in PHSCE, the work of our student council and year councils, our participation in the Youth Parliament elections, our mock general election in May and our visit from Lord Teverson before Christmas. We also have been able to secure a visit for students to the Houses of Parliament after Easter.

At Liskeard we are excited about the term ahead. We have many things planned and so much to look forward to. I always think that the start of a new year and a new term is a good time for reflection. Last term was certainly a busy one, but finished with a number of wonderful events, including the school production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and of course, the annual Christmas Concert. Both were well received and we were very proud of all the students involved.

Obviously our main duty as a school is to ensure students are happy and safe from harm. As part of our safeguarding practice we have spent the last 3 weeks during tutor time looking at why and how young people get drawn into extremism and radicalisation. Assemblies, Newswatch and discussion time during PHSCE lessons have been used to give students a better understanding of the issues. All the resources we have used plus some guidance for parents can be found on the school website (Parents/Carers > PHSCE). I strongly recommend you have a look and talk to your son/daughter about the issues that we have discussed.

I am delighted to announce that the school has been awarded the Artsmark Gold Award by the Arts Council, England. This is the highest accolade schools can be given by the Arts Council and we are one of the first schools in the country to receive the new award. The award recognises our commitment to the arts and culture and the opportunities we provide students to create, compose, and perform.

The summer holidays now seem like a distant memory and we are back into the routine of school life. Once again I have to say how impressed I have been with the attitude of students towards their learning. Year 7 have had an exceptional start and Year 11 are focussed and already thinking about their mock exams! It's been wonderful to see so many of last year's Year 11 students return to join the 6th form college and continue their education with us. I know they are going to enjoy their time here and achieve great things.
