Mr Alex Lingard BSc (Hons)
Head Teacher

With nearly three weeks of term completed we are well and truly back into the routine of school life! Lots has been happening since we returned: we’ve had several rugby fixtures so far – of particular note was a great win for Year 10 against Penrice and the exceptional performances of Ethan Brenton-Crabb and Ethan Hill in Year 7 playing for our Year 8 team. The U18 Football Academy had their first match, against probably the toughest opposition in the league, winning 2-0 with goals from Callum McGhee and Josh Doney.

Students in years 7 – 11 have also been selected to join the Football Academy and will begin their training programme next week with Plymouth Argyle coach Mr Hodge. With the talent that has already been spotted the future looks bright for the academy! Building on its success we have been busy creating two more ‘excellence academies’ supporting the talents of elite students in the arts and in maths. These will be rolled out throughout the year and fully launched next September, however brief details of each can now be found on our website.

Many other clubs are up and running; student council reps have been selected and many students are well on their way to achieve one of the elements of their community awards. Mr Willmott has been putting our Year 10 gifted and talented students through their paces this week challenging them to work with cosmological data to solve the mysteries of the universe! We held a GCSE information evening last week for Year 10 and it was fantastic to see so many students and parents in attendance. May I thank all of you who attended for your on-going support.

Next week sees Year 7 off to Porthpean. As always this promises to be a great week full of challenges and experiences that will last in their memories for a long time to come. We hope they have a great time. We’ve also had an A Level Biology trip to Wembury and students taking part in a beach sports festival at Bude.

The highlight of this week has to have been our Open Evening for Year 6 students and their parents. The school has never looked so good and our students did us proud. Three hundred (!) of them volunteered to be tour guides; to be subject helpers or to entertain visitors with music. As always the science department wowed everyone with the marvels of science; there were wonderful drama and dance performances; an amazing welcome by the Samba Band; a French style café and so much more. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with a number of Year 6 students asking if they can join early! Many parents commented on the friendliness of the staff, the sense of community, the great facilities and the politeness and confidence of our students. How right they are!
