Mr Alex Lingard BSc (Hons)
Head Teacher

Please be aware that if your child is in Year 8 or 9 their target grades and forecast grades in the recent progress Checks may have changed considerably since the end of last year. As we learn more about the new GCSEs and what each grade ‘looks like’ we are adjusting our internal assessments and grading boundaries accordingly. As always, the most important aspect of the Progress Checks are the Attitude to Learning scores and we’d be grateful if you could discuss these with your son or daughter, praising them for hard work and effort. All students should be aiming for 1s or 2s: 1 = excellent2 = good3 = satisfactory4 = poor5 = serious concern.

The wait is over and students are finding out this week which House they are in. After weeks of planning, students voted to decide the names of the Houses. A shortlist was chosen by the Student Council and all students and staff were given the opportunity to vote for their personal favourite. Over 750 votes were cast and there was a landslide victory for mythological creatures! Each House ties in nicely to one of our key attitudes or values. Each House will compete for the new, very shiny, House Cup, which will be presented on Sports Day in July. May the best House win!

We are absolutely delighted to welcome the amazing Pearl of Africa Choir to the school next month. On 20th November they will be coming into school to run African dancing, singing and drumming workshops to some of our students. In the evening they will perform a concert, open to everyone. The choir is currently touring the country raising funds for their Childcare Foundation – a charity that enables children in Africa to receive at least one meal a day and access to schooling. Tickets will be available from the Finance Office (8.30am - 4.30pm) after half-term (minimum donation of £5 for adults and £3 concessions). This is one not to miss. Get your tickets quickly before they sell out!

Next September we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary of becoming a comprehensive school. On Friday 21st September 2018, we will be holding a ‘community day’ for ex-students and local residents. We aim to have an exhibition on display to show the history of the school, put together by our Year 8 students. If you, or any members of your family, are ex-students and have any old photos or memorabilia you are willing to lend us, please get in touch.

Unbelievably, we find ourselves in the Autumn term. They say time flies when you’re having fun and certainly, seeing the Year 7s at Porthpean, much fun has been had! Time also flies when you’re busy – and an awful lot of good events and good news stories have already been taking place this year. Walking around the school, I’ve been impressed with the purposeful atmosphere in classrooms – students taking their studies seriously, whether in years 7, 8, 9 or an examination year. A great attitude to learning is key to students’ success, but we must also remember that a bit of fun in school is no bad thing.
