Liskeard School and Community College have celebrated a win in the first round of the prestigious English Speaking Union’s ‘Mace’ Debating competition.  Four teams from Liskeard School, Truro School and Isca Academy in Exeter debated the statements: ‘This house would ban the sale and consumption of meat’ and ‘This house would build homes on the Green Belt’.

The format of the competition requires two speakers to propose or oppose a motion in two seven-minute long speeches.  There is then an open floor debate followed by a four-minute summary and rebuttal from one of the two speakers from each team.  The first two speeches can be interrupted, making for a highly challenging format.

Not only do the speakers have to speak eloquently and articulately in front of an audience for a considerable time, they more importantly have to articulate a powerful argument and think on their feet.

Sixth Form students Jack Bartlett and Luke Marriott represented Liskeard and spoke with huge skill and poise.  They were praised particularly by the lead judge for staying calm under pressure, and for their thoughtful arguments and articulacy.  They will now proceed to the regional finals next year.

The competition is a great vehicle for developing young people’s ability to speak confidently and powerfully – an essential skill for the real world.  It forms part of one of the school’s key priorities to develop its students’ confidence and real-world skills.

Year 13 student Jack Bartlett said: “It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it.  It was really challenging but stimulating and I was really impressed by the standards of everyone who spoke.”
