The Greenpower Go Kart challenge is a national event where teams of young people volunteer to build a go kart almost from scratch.  They are given a basic kit and two 12volt batteries, but the budding young engineers have to design the most fuel-efficient model to race at one of several tracks across the UK.  The competition is based upon how far you can get the kart to go with one full charge of the battery.

The team, coached and supported by Design Technology and Engineering teacher, Tom Hurdwell, have worked hard on Thursday afternoons for a year to design, build, test and adjust their kart.  The hard work paid off with a great day and race at their first event, and the team is now back in the pits and working on the modifications and tweaks to further enhance their performance!

The team is indebted to many great sponsors whose generosity has enabled the school to raise the considerable funds necessary to enter this prestigious event: Restormel Engineering, the Cornwall Manufacturing Group, Liskeard Town Council, Liskeard Town Forum, and the Greenpower Education Trust itself.

Former Liskeard mayor and sponsor, Jane Pascoe, said: “I was so happy for the students and so pleased I could be there to witness the inaugural race meeting.  After a few problems in the first race they accepted their disappointment and set about resolving the technical faults and lapped for close on 2 hours in the final race, with no apparent loss of power.  Amazing!  Their conduct through the whole day and the team work and kindness to each other, especially sharing the plum job of driving, was an inspiration, and I was proud to be part of their team for the day.”

Mr. Hurdwell was delighted with the experience and how the students dealt with the challenges they have faced along the way.

“I am so proud to be part of #TeamLiskeard Greenpower race team. The work the team have put in over the past year has been phenomenal. Each student showed massive resilience when the car broke down in the first lap of the first race and we were seconds from not getting to the starting grid. However, with help from parents, sponsors and everyone who came along on the day, we managed to get the car on that track and racing. I was blown away by how effective the car performed! This was testament to the team effort put in by the students, who managed the race brilliantly. Next year, we will produce a car to rival the world champions, Richard Lander!” he said.
