Year 8 students at Liskeard School & Community College enjoyed their third annual democracy trip to London last week, which focused on politics and giving students a voice. The first day of the trip included visits to the London Central Islamic Mosque and the Houses of Parliament before watching a performance of Aladdin. Students’ behaviour was exemplary whilst out and about in London and they were great company.

Students had a tour of the Houses of Parliament before watching debates in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. They then took part in a couple of debates themselves on topics such as whether to abolish school uniform and whether there should be free WiFi everywhere. Students gave some fantastic arguments for and against and overall voted to keep school uniform!

Liskeard School would like to thank Sheryl Murray MP, who every year makes time to visit us in the education centre to talk to students and answer any questions they have – this year’s questions being excellent!

Feedback from the students was great, with Sophie saying “It was one of the best times of my life and the journey is definitely worth it”, and Teagan and Lily who agreed that “everything was so amazing to see and all the different experiences were so good.”

Assistant Head, Dawn Penberthy, outlined the importance of the trip.

“At Liskeard School, we believe in the importance of students learning about politics, democracy and having a voice.  One of our sixth form students, Luke Moynan, is currently the South East Cornwall member of Youth Parliament. It is through activities like mock elections and our annual Year 8 trip to the Houses of Parliament that we hope to engage more students in politics and to campaign passionately for what they believe in and to make a difference,” she said.
