October saw the return of Liskeard School and Community College’s annual residential experience at Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre for the new Year 7 students.

Each day started with a hearty breakfast to provide the necessary energy for the day's activities ahead which included the traditional 7 mile circular Blackhead walk. Some students attempted to set new records for the fastest time to complete the walk whereas others adopted a more leisurely pace, enjoying the phenomenal sea and coastal views.

Groups also enjoyed a shorter and more sedate stroll to the picturesque harbour at Charlestown, where students undertook a variety of subject based tasks and enjoyed the hospitality of the traditional sweet shop.

Without a doubt the activities talked about and enjoyed the most were both day time, instructor led, activities which consisted of sea kayaking and the high ropes course. The good weather conditions allowed all groups to experience the sea kayaking journey from Porthpean Beach to a secluded cove, which is only accessible from the sea, and students had the opportunity to see the local seals and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The journey was interspersed with frequent water activities. On reaching the cove students were given the opportunity to test their courage by jumping into the sea from a small ledge.

The High ropes involved courage and working as a team to scale the Jacobs Ladder, racing as a team to conquer the swinging rope and bridge course and co-operating as a team of four to climb and balance at the top of the wobbly pole.

After the excitement of the daytime activities came those of the evening as students climbed the indoor climbing wall, whizzed down the zip wire, threw themselves off the leap of faith and endured the solitude of the blindfold night trail.

Without a doubt the overwhelming response from all the students at the conclusion of their experience was a combination of enjoyment, relief and exhaustion.

Organiser Mark Lemin said “It was a fantastic week. I can honestly say that all students demonstrated courage, resilience and kindness.”
