Liskeard School staff and members of the Town Council and local community were delighted to benefit from a first aid training session run by Sarah Dormor, Senior Resuscitation Officer at the Derriford Hospital.  The opportunity arose from the donation of a defibrillator by local charity Heartswell in February.

Sarah volunteers her time with the charity and ran a highly enjoyable and informative session about how to help and potentially save the life of someone who suffers a heart attack.  By both being able to perform CPR competently and use a defibrillator (there is now one on the school site and six in Liskeard) people’s chances of surviving a heart attack dramatically increase from around 8% to up to 70%.

The school aims to bring this essential and potentially life-saving skill into the curriculum of all its students.

Alex Lingard, Head Teacher, said: “We are extremely grateful to David Wells from Heartswell and Jane Pascoe, recent mayor, for setting us up with this opportunity and providing the defibrillator for our school.   We are even more grateful to Sarah Dormor for giving up several hours to train members of our local community and we are looking forward to working further with her and providing these life-saving skills to all of our students.”
