Liskeard School and Community College recently held a non-uniform day to raise funds for Year 10 student Kathryn Walters. The money raised is helping to take her to Guelph, Ontario, Canada to take part in the 2017 World Dwarf Games this summer.

The school was recently visited by Tom, a regional development officer, from the Dwarf Sports Association. Tom presented to students about sporting opportunities and support for people with dwarfism and restricted growth conditions.

Kathryn found her love for sports at the age of 4 and competed in her first Dwarf Games in Birmingham when she was 5. Kathryn has gone on to compete in every games since, winning over 25 medals in that time including an impressive 8 gold’s. In last year’s event Kathryn won 3 gold’s, in the 100m run, 60m run and 25m backstroke, and added to her incredible haul with 3 silvers and 3 bronze medal.

Kathryn said “I am beyond ecstatic to be going to compete in the World Dwarf Games. I am competing in a number of events including basketball, track events, football, hockey, swimming and cycling so I am really hoping to bring some medals home.”

The games spans 2 weeks and Kathryn is travelling with her brother, Liskeard Sixth Form student Tom Walters, and her father as they look forward to seeing the sites and enjoying the carnival at the close of the event.

Kathryn’s Head of Year Ken Gluyas said “Kathryn has been a very successful athlete and swimmer in the dwarf games and she is a fantastic ambassador for Liskeard School. We are all looking forward to seeing her in September with her haul of medals from the World Games in Canada.”
