Students at Liskeard School & Community College were gripped with the events leading up to the recent General Election as the school continued its drive to get more young people interested in politics.

The School was awarded the prestigious Discovering Democracy Award last year by the British Youth Council for creating a positive culture of citizenship and democracy. Liskeard Sixth Form student Luke Moynan was also recently honoured to be voted the East Cornwall Representative in the UK Youth Parliament. His role is South East Cornwall Member of Youth Parliament. He takes a lead role in the newly formed South East Cornwall Youth Cabinet set up to support the MYP and engage more young people in politics.

Students took part in a variety of activities and debates on the lead up to the election which included a Sixth Form Hustings a week before the election. Phil Hutty from the Liberal Democrats, Martin Corney from the Green Party and Gareth Derrick from Labour presented their parties’ manifesto and took part in a question and answer session.

On the day of the election students from every year group took part in a Mock Election, allowing them to vote for the candidate they felt would best represent the people of South East Cornwall.

Labour candidate Gareth Derrick came out on top with 281 votes followed by Martin Corney with 143, Sheryll Murray of the Conservatives with 137 and Phil Hutty with 76.  It was a stark contrast to the 2015 result where Sheryll Murray was a clear winner with the Greens and UKIP tied in second.

Alex Lingard, Head Teacher said, “It has been wonderful to see how the young have engaged in the recent election, both in school and across the country. Their voice is as important as any and we must actively encourage them to speak up and take an interest in the world around them.”
