The Technology Department at Liskeard School & Community College has nominated Sixth Form student Will Kitto for the top award for his outstanding work throughout his A Level Engineering course.

Will produced a product of high complexity and engineering competence. He designed a gearbox complete with all the internal components on industrial software located at Liskeard School called Solidworks. His Computer Aided Design and CAD engineering drawings were commended by Jim Underwood, managing Director of Restormel Machine LTD.

Will manufactured most of the parts at Restormel Machine LTD supervised by Jim Underwood, where he used Computer Numerical Control, CNC milling machines and CNC lathes machining parts from plastics, phosphorous bronze, low carbon steel and aluminium.

The Technology Department have made close links with Restormel Machine LTD this year and hope to continue working together in the future with the new A Level Product Design course that starts this September. Engineering and Electronics teacher Rob Meier and Engineering Technician James Barrett have both had CNC training at Restormel Machine this year. The department are currently looking for funding to purchase their own CNC milling machine in order for students to manufacture more complex real world products such as water turbines or types of engines.

Jim Underwood has stated that he is willing to continue to train staff and students at Liskeard School in the hope that this further betters the students understanding and knowledge of CNC programming and developing more precision engineering in their products.
