A young group of enterprising students from Liskeard School and Community College have recently been recognised for their business skills and resilience by a panel of top Cornish businessmen and women. Fantasy Trading Cards Cornwall, a Young Enterprise Company, were awarded the ‘Special Recognition Award’ at the Young Enterprise Innovation Awards in Penzance in May.

Over the course of the last year, a group of Year 10 students set up and have been running their own business, as part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme. Whilst many ideas were discussed and in the early stages even produced, the team finally agreed on their product, Ultimate Universe, a trading card game based around the theme of the universe set on an imaginary tourist spaceship. For the last year, the group have had weekly board meetings, carried out market research, designed and produced prototypes of their product, managed their accounts, attended trade fairs and written a full business plan.

All of this work led up to the Innovation Awards where the team pitched their product to a panel of judges. They were so impressed that they presented the team with the ‘Special Recognition Award’. The judges cited the team’s professionalism, well presented and confident pitch and their resilience to setbacks over the year as reasons for the award.

Company Managing Director Harrison Elliott said “The experience has been an eye opener to the world of business. It has been an enjoyable and interesting experience.” Finance Director Charlie Durneen added “Over the course of this competition, I have grown more in confidence than I thought was possible, and that is a good thing.”

Business teacher and Programme Leader at the school, Nathan Aird, said “The Young Enterprise Company Programme is a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience running a business as well as nurture their innovation and creativity in a supportive and professional environment. The team should be really proud of what they have achieved this year, their well-deserved award and the high-standing comments the judges gave as the reasons for it.”

At this moment in time, Fantasy Trading Cards plan on developing their product further after the official programme finishes and the school hope to offer the programme again next year for any budding future entrepreneurs!
