Liskeard School and Community College were thrilled to welcome guests to the launch of their Greenpower Go Kart Challenge.  The Mayor and representatives from the Town Forum, Town Council, Restormel CNC Engineering and Kawasaki PM in Plymouth celebrated the completion of nine months of fund raising with staff and students at the school.

The fundraising has enabled the school to enter the prestigious Greenpower Education Trust’s Go Kart competition.  The event takes place nationally and involves teams of students designing and building a sustainably powered go kart and racing this in competitions on race tracks around the country.  The school has raised over £3,000 to enable students to have this opportunity and is extremely grateful to the Cornwall Manufacturing Group, Futureworks, Restormel CNC Engineering, Liskeard Chamber of Commerce, Liskeard Town Council and Liskeard Town Forum for this generous funding.

Thanks to Ken Martin from the Cornwall Manufacturing Group and a grant sourced from Futureworks, the school has also been delighted to receive a 3D printer which will be instrumental in helping students design and create industrial standard products for GCSE and A level courses.

Special thanks go to Jane Pascoe, Liskeard Town Mayor, and Sue Brownloe, school governor, who have been instrumental in promoting the school’s engineering specialism and fundraising.

Rob Meier, head of Engineering at the school, said, “This funding will enable enthusiastic, budding young engineers to work on a real project, out of regular school hours, and to compete in an exciting, national competition.  It’s a great opportunity for us all!”

Ann Yoxall, Head of Construction and Product Design, said, “This 3-D printer is a real step forward for us.  It’s going to be great to see what students can come up with using the latest technology.”

Jane Pascoe, Mayor, said, “The challenge to link education, industry and the community through inspirational engineering projects has been met by Liskeard School working with local businesses and organisations."  She added "I was delighted to connect the Engineering department at the school to Steve Cardew of Kawasaki PM UK and Mr Jim Underwood of Restormel Machines in Lostwithiel, who have both generously mentored and invested in the project and accommodated students at their factories.  We are continuing to work together to create a pathway to employment and to promote apprenticeships and careers in Engineering for our young people in SE Cornwall.” She added that she was very much looking forward to supporting them in their maiden race at Newquay airport.
