Brendon Teague, a Condition Based Maintenance engineering Manager from South West Water, delivered a presentation and demonstrated numerous pieces of equipment including thermal imaging cameras, laser aligning equipment, Oil Analysis equipment and Vibration Monitoring and Analysis software to support Liskeard Sixth Form A-level students with their coursework on ‘The Engineering Environment.’

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) is a process where equipment condition is monitored for early signs of impending failure using non-destructive testing methods. Motors and pumps have sensors attached to them to monitor wear. Students were fascinated to learn that every component that rotates generates a specific sound and frequency. Knowing the frequency of a bearing, pump impellor or rotary product allows you to determine when it will fail.

Students were taught how bearings within rotating machinery such as motors, pumps, gearboxes are tested for temperature, bearing vibration – velocity (mm/s) and bearing condition – shock pulse or noise (dB).

The students had the opportunity to learn about degree level electrical, electronic and mechanics such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which is an algorithm within the CBM software that separates individual frequencies. It detects vibration amplitudes for each frequency, amplitudes at a specific frequency and its harmonics that represent specific defects.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon of engineering theory and using all the equipment “I was pleased to apply what I had learnt in Physics about resonant frequencies in real world engineering.”

Mr Teague also said that South West Water are offering an Apprenticeship in Condition Based Monitoring/Maintenance to A-level students interested in this field of engineering. An outstanding opportunity accomplished by the many engineering links Liskeard School has with industry.
