Liskeard School and Community College was delighted last week to welcome David Wells (Director of local charity, Heartswell).  David came to donate a defibrillator to the school and also to arrange a training programme for students and staff in the school to educate all about the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest and related problems, and how to respond.

The school was connected with Heartswell by the Town Mayor, Jane Pascoe, and is extremely grateful for this generous and important addition to their first aid equipment.  Heartswell provides defibrillators and training about heart failure and how to respond all over Devon and Cornwall.  One of their key strategies is to get equipment and training into schools to enable these essential life-saving skills and awareness to spread throughout communities.  Cardiovascular (heart and circulatory) disease causes more than a quarter (26 per cent) of all deaths in the UK; that’s nearly 160,000 deaths each year – an average of 435 people each day or one death every three minutes.

James O’Connell, Deputy Head at the school said, “We are really grateful and pleased to have this opportunity to both better equip ourselves and receive this expert training, thanks to Heartswell.  This has come at an ideal time as we are seeking to develop first aid training into the curriculum for all students in the school.”
