Liskeard School GCSE engineering students went on an industrial visit to Teagle near Redruth to see first-hand how a local engineering manufacturing company produces large scale mass produced products. Teagle is a ‘Land based’ engineering company that design and manufacture agricultural machinery such as cattle feeding/bedding machines, muck spreaders and mowing machines, to name but a few.

The focus of the visit was to study and research how an engineering company manufacture products from stages of design, making, assembly and testing.

Students had a presentation by one of the engineering team before a tour of each department of the factory. The designers discussed how the products were designed on Solid works; a Computer Aided Design software package that the students use at Liskeard School. They showed the students the relevance of developing mechanical engineering designs through 3D modelling, testing using Finite Element Analysis and mathematical calculations to work out the stresses on the products before being made.

The students were amazed as they walked around the factory and saw all the new technology such as Plasma cutting machines, CNC robotic welders, CNC lathes and powder coating booths which stood as large as small houses.

All the students said how pleased they were at seeing how such large products were manufactured from the design process to being made. Now they can relate what happens in industry to the coursework products they are making and the relevance of what they have been learning in engineering at Liskeard School.
