Fifteen of our top set year 10 students attended a further maths support programme (FMSP) day at Penryn Campus on Friday 6th January. The purpose of the day was to inspire our highest achievers in maths to pursue the subject at A-level and to think about where maths might take them in the future.

The day was divided into two lectures, a number of interactive workshops and a “Dragon Quiz”!

Our students were a little unsure and slightly nervous at the start of the day. Needless to say, they soon emerged from their collective shell! Eren Kocyigit soon found good form, showing immense enthusiasm for the “Santa’s shortest route problem”. The fact that it is January left him a little more than vexed!

Opportunities to see maths in action were then facilitated by the four workshops, ranging from the spread of infectious diseases to card tricks and probability.

The “Dragon Quiz” was a real test, however. Particularly since our students were “encouraged” to mix with different schools to form alliances. The winning team consisted of Lydia Rees and Elspeth Payne, two of our shining stars in year 10 – well done!

Personally, I think the highlight of the day was the keynote lecture by Ben Sparks entitled The Creation of Number. His hour-long delivery had the students wowed by questions and concepts not before experienced by our young mathematicians. There were moments of genuine surprise and excitement mixed with humour and paradox. Does 1 really equal 2?! Algebra had us convinced that it did. And why does A4 paper measure 297 x 210 mm? As everyone knows, it’s something to do with the irrational nature of root 2!

In summary, there were fifteen students on the coach heading back to Liskeard actually talking with real enthusiasm about maths. Now, that’s what I would call a successful day out!
