Local policeman, PC Turner Moore, recently arranged a Hate Crime workshop for students in Years 7 to 9 at Liskeard School & Community College. The workshop explained what hate crime is, its effect on people’s lives, what constitutes a Hate Crime offence and how to report it. The students heard from two guest speakers who had been victims of Hate Crime.

The workshop also explored the stories of refugees. This helped to develop an understanding of the experience they may have had that has led them to become a refugee. Representatives from each tutor group led Personal, Social Health and Education (PSHE) sessions to share what they had learnt with their tutor group.

Following the workshop students had the opportunity to enter a Holocaust Memorial Day competition with the theme ‘How Can Life Go On’. Liskeard School sent a range of entries to be judged and the work entered will be on display in Truro Cathedral on the 27th January as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day Sensory Walk.

The school was delighted to welcome PC Turner Moore back to announce the winners for each category in the competition. Laura Hiscock won first prize in the Art and Photography category. Elspeth Payne won the Poetry category and Will Stuart was the winner of the Short Essay.

Liskeard School was proud to win the overall school prize for the Art and Photography entries and is now looking forward to taking part in the Holocaust Memorial Day Service and seeing the work on display.

Assistant Head Teacher Dawn Penberthy said 'Students approached the workshop and competition with maturity and sensitivity. It was great to see students peer teaching their tutor groups in PSHE. I cannot wait to see the range of excellent work on display at Truro Cathedral in January'
