On Saturday 7th May 2016 11 girls from Liskeard School and 3 students from Looe, Richard Lander and Newquay Tretharras attended the Under 15 National Girls Rugby Finals held at Lichfield RFC, Birmingham. The tournament started with a match against St Pauls School from Norfolk. An evenly contested game saw the Liskeard girls have a try disallowed for being held up before Merryn Doidge ended a flowing move involving the majority of the backs by scoring in the corner. Unfortunately concentration and focus was lost for a split second as St Pauls broke through a resolute and organised defence to equalise, as the referee concluded the match.

The second game saw Liskeard entertain Copplestone High School from Ipswich. Another very tight game where defences predominately came out on top saw one try scored by each team. Liskeard School’s try came from left winger Jamelia Alexander who outpaced the defence to score in the corner. The game was heading for a draw before Copplestone School broke through the Liskeard defence to score literally as the referee blew for full time, thus losing the match 5-10.

The third game saw Liskeard play St Pauls School, Bristol and demonstrated fully the full extent of their attacking play as the ball winning capabilities of the forwards secured good early ball to release the dangerous backs. Tries from Asha Van Meurs, Merryn Doidge and two from Brenna Rowe (Richard Lander School) saw Liskeard emerge as winners by 20-0.

Game four effectively ended liskeards chances of winning the competition as sustained pressure on the try line of Sirius Academy, Hull (the National Rugby League Champions) and a turnover at a ruck saw them break away to outpace Liskeard girls and score in the corner. Despite a valiant attacking display, tiredness started to set in and two more tries were conceded to eventually lose 0-15.

In our final group game with several players nursing injuries Liskeard played Robert Clack secondary School, London and unfortunately lost 10-20 with tries being scored by Merryn Doidge and Abi Bartlett.

This result meant that Liskeard ended the group stage in fifth place and after a final game which was drawn 5-5 (Merryn Doidge with her fourth try) the girls finished the competition in ninth place.
