The Science Department at Liskeard School recently put on their annual Science Show as part of British Science Week. The show was an experimental extravaganza lead by teachers Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett whose enthusiasm and love for their subject shone throughout the performance.    

There were huge methane fireballs, exploding liquid nitrogen, elephant's toothpaste, Wotsits cooled to -189c and clock reactions to name a few of the experiments. The evening, enjoyed by a packed audience in the New Hall, fell on National Demo Day. This year the audience was also treated to the live dissection of a bull heart.

All of these impressive experiments were tied together with this year's ‘energy’ theme where the audience learned the effect of removing energy and adding energy at a molecular level.  

Tickets to the show were in high demand following a visit from two local primary schools who were invited to watch the rehearsal show. They enjoyed watching some of Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett's favourite experiments as well as having the opportunity to try some delicious ice cream made with liquid nitrogen.  Staff and students alike had a brilliant time planning and watching the show and cannot wait to find some new demonstrations for next year.

Head of science Michelle Oldham said"This was our best show yet, I have never seen so many people stay behind to ask questions and say how fascinated they were!"

A parent was thrilled with the evening “What a great evening, Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett were brilliant and made it really interesting for young and old. Well worth the entrance fee, I am just disappointed I missed out on a frozen Wotsit!"


Science Show 2016 by Molly Burchell, 7A

The Science Show was packed with an hour and thirty minutes of science experiments. The topic of this years show was energy. Science teachers Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett set some bubbles on fire using the fire triangle. This consisted of oxygen (the air) fuel (the bubbles) and heat (the lighter.)

The next thing that they did that I found interesting was blowing up balloons. The principle behind the experiment is that when you put heat to a balloon, there is a mass build up of kinetic energy to force the walls of the balloon to break and the balloon to blow up.

Next we witnessed a Wotsit being set on fire. They were successful but it wasn't a very big flame so the teachers put it in liquid nitrogen and then tried the experiment again. Then Wotsit then burst into a big flame.

Next Mr Inger tried to set a pair of metal tweezers on fire to demonstrate how some objects are resistant. As it didn't work he set some oxygenated metal wool on fire and the result was a huge ball of flame. This worked by increasing the surface area of the metal.

The last experiment I want to write about is the UV lights shone over tennis balls. This is when the UV lights are on and tennis balls are all swung at once. The direction of the tennis balls are a bit like the particles in a transverse wave and the pattern changed to look like a longitudinal wave.

In conclusion, my favourite experiment that I have talked about is the tennis ball one. This is because personally, I don't like big bangs and danger (although from a distance I'm ok with it.) Also, this was because I like that the direction looked like wave particles, not physically going anywhere but still moving.
