On 24th and 25th March we took a road trip up to the University of Warwick with the year 12 further mathematicians. The students had their first real taste of university life. We were met by one of the student ambassadors who gave us a tour of the university. We were visiting the maths and statistics department and had a couple of lectures. These were very informative on the courses that are available, as well as studying away from home and living independently.

After that, we continued on our tour of the campus and had dinner in one of the restaurants. We stayed in one of the halls of residence overnight and this meant that our students had a real taste of a campus university.

The next day we had a couple more lectures as well as a talk on student finances. We also had an active session on problem solving, during which the students worked on different types of mathematical problems. This was led by Dr Richard Lissaman who will be doing some more work in the summer with our students. Lunch was provided in the department and then we worked on some maths problems in one of the main lecture theatre auditoriums; this was run by our student ambassador, Sukhi.

Overall it was a very positive experience for our students and gave them a valuable insight into all aspects of university life. We would like to thank Professor Jane Hutton for organising the trip from the Warwick end.
