Students from Years 7 to 13 took part in Liskeard School’s Mock Election day on Thursday 7th May. As the local electorate was visiting the polling stations, students were also voting for their S.E Cornwall candidates in the ALC, which was set up with polling booths and authentic ballot boxes.

A Year 9 Polling Station Clerk said “We took part in a mock election as polling station clerks. The ALC was closed for the day so that we could use it as a polling station. Year 7 were first to vote in period 1. They came in class by class. Our job was to take their names and tutor group and as we ticked the voting register we handed them their ballet papers”

In the run up to the elections, students from Years 10 -13 attended a husting with the local party candidates. All students were able to watch this through a recording shown in PSCHE lessons. PSCHE lessons also focused on the democratic process in the run-up to the elections, with many great debates and discussions taking place.

A Year 9 student said “After school, seven of the clerks, including us, stayed to part and count the votes. We counted each party’s votes twice, sometimes three times to triple check. After we had finished counting, we were sworn to secrecy until the official results were revealed. The Conservatives won overall. We enjoyed this experience and would do it again”
