September has been a superb month at Liskeard School for fundraising. The school has a proud tradition of fundraising for a number of charities both locally, nationally and even internationally.

The fundraising began with Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 19 September, an annual event the school has supported for a number of years. It was a huge success this year with more staff and students taking part than ever before.  Every member of our school community was invited to wear jeans with their usual work wear or school uniform and bring in £1 to raise money for research into treatment of genetic disorders which affect all of our lives in one way or another.  In the week leading up to Jeans for Genes day pupils learned about children who have benefited from money raised for the charity and on the day itself Years 7 to 9 had special science lessons to teach them about the science behind genetic disorders.  As always students were exemplary in displaying their empathy and compassion for the cause. In total £748.36 was raised.

A charity which has always been close to the school’s heart is Macmillan Cancer Support. Mrs Cornish arranged a cake sale with help from staff and students as part of their fundraising week and raised a further £44.

Fundraising-Gig-RowThere were also some individual efforts from staff at Liskeard School. On 27 September teacher Laura Hoskin went to London with two rowing crews from ‘Rame Gig Club’ to take part in the Great River Race. The 22.6 mile race, on the River Thames, started at the London Docklands and ended at Ham in Surrey. The race was an amazing experience – it allowed for the famous London landmarks to be viewed from a completely different perspective, and negotiating the passing of under twenty-eight bridges, alongside many other boats, was an experience in itself! The mixed crew had a fantastic race and finished in 2hrs 25mins and were the first mixed crew to cross the finish line!

As a club, they decided they wanted to use this race as an opportunity to raise money for a well deserving local charity - Ellie’s Haven. The fantastic efforts of the crew members has meant that over £1700 has been raised. This money will be helping towards extending and adapting an Ellie’s Haven property, so that children with long term or life limiting illnesses, and their families, can spend quality time together.

Fundraising-Shine-Night-WalkStaff member Richard Luscombe, with his partner Kelly O’Leary, took part in the Shine Night Walk in aid of Cancer Research UK. The walk took place in London at night from 10.30pm until the early hours of the morning. The walk covered a full 26.2 mile marathon distance and followed a route around London’s famous landmarks including The London Eye, Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Shard and many others, all lit up beautifully in London’s vibrant night hours. Over £300 was raised with donations from friends, family and staff at Liskeard School.

The fundraising continued in October. Staff member Mandy Gaynor took part in the Memory Walk to raise over £300 for the Alzheimer’s Society. The walk took place on the glorious Plymouth Hoe to raise money and awareness for this great cause.

Students Tamara Williams, Kirsty Murfin and all of 8A organised a cake sale and raised a brilliant £87 for Stand Up to Cancer.

Well done to everyone that took part and everyone for their generous donations!
