Liskeard School held its first Safer Internet Day to encourage responsible use of the Internet. The day was a huge success with many students engaging in discussion and activities. Safer Internet Day is organized by Insafe to promote safer use of all online technology. It runs on the second day of the second week of the second month and is now on its eleventh year.

There is a different theme each year and on the 11th February 2014 the tag line was ‘Let’s create a better Internet together.’ This recognizes that children, young people and adults create new material with which others interact.

Assemblies and lessons for all year groups were run throughout the day. Results from research show that 93% of all 5-15 year olds used the Internet in 2013. At secondary school 99% of children use the Internet regularly. Despite these high numbers only 43% of parents have parental controls on household technology and a similar number do not supervise their children on the Internet.

This would suggest that adults assume that children are safe online and do not need supervision. Unfortunately, the research tells us something different as 43% of children have been bullied online and a quarter have been bullied online more than once. Also a ChildLine survey of 13 - 18 year olds found that 60% of children had been asked for a sexual image or video of themselves.   Unfortunately, only one in ten children will report concerns to a trusted adult.

Ideas on whom to trust and why were raised in a series of lesson plans for students. An open evening for parents was also held on Wednesday 12th February from 6 – 7:30pm. The evening suggested a range of tips and advice including the following:

  • Set clear privacy settings and check they have not been changed by the social networking site.
  • Only accepting friend requests from people you know in real life.
  • If you receive cyber-bullying save the evidence and tell an adult if something is upsetting you online.

Now it is time to prepare for Tuesday 10th February 2015, mark the date!
