Liskeard School and Community College hosted a special co-operative day at the school on 18th December to celebrate the school becoming part of the Liskeard Community Co-operative Learning Trust.  All year groups were mixed together to complete tasks and challenges across the school with the help of staff and our trust partners UTC Aerospace Systems (formerly known as Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems.

The day began with an inspirational speech from head teacher Donna Bryant and was followed by presentations, including talks from staff members from UTC who spent the day at the school getting involved with the tasks and students.

Liskeard-School-Cooperative-DayActivities were varied and included Problem Solving, Visual Values, Fairtrade, Technology Christmas Co-op; and Team Building with a strong emphasis at all times on the Trust’s co-operative values: self –help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity.

Students worked together in their groups to complete challenges, overcome obstacles and demonstrate their teamwork and problem solving skills.  In the Old Hall, with guidance from UTC’s Engineering staff, pupils had thirty minutes to design and build a bridge using paper and sticky tape with prizes for the most aesthetic and the one which could hold the most weight.  There were some superb structures and ideas with most holding the maximum weight available.

There were Maths and PE problems for the students to overcome.  The maths department had the students constructing geodesic domes which are strong and are used in the Arctic as tents. The mix of regular pentagons and regular triangles can withstand very strong winds.  Students used Jelly Babies and spaghetti to make their templates - they really enjoyed this.  Bamboo canes and masking tape were used for the final construction.

The PE department utilised the gym and Lux Park to allow the pupils to demonstrate their team working skills.  Obstacle courses were set up with varying props and hazards for the pupils to overcome, requiring both mental and physical effort including a blind folded obstacle course where students relied on their team to talk them through the course ahead.

In Drama students explored the meaning of the values and devised a performance to showcase their understanding. In Music students worked together co-operatively to plan and perform Samba.

Students developed their understanding of ethical Business with the Humanities team, in a simulation trading exercise.

In Technology, hundreds of plastic litre bottles were collected to help build a recycled greenhouse at the school and wooden trees were made and decorated to be displayed in the hall with sleighs filled with sweets. There were a number of items being produced by pupils for sale at the end of the day:  there were festive cakes, biscuits and chutneys , Christmas coasters, slate signs and hessian bags.

The Art department produced a tapestry of images to be placed on a board, each square produced by an individual student.  The final outcome would see the words ‘Achieving More Together’ spelled out, Liskeard School’s motto, with the co-operative values running through the images.

The day culminated in the sale of the items made by pupils to parents, students and staff with a Drama presentation and song produced about the wonders of Cornwall which the pupils had previously performed at the International Year of Co-operatives in Manchester along with other co-operative schools in the region.

Pupils, staff and guests from our partners had an amazing day with fun and learning combined.  Pupils were impressed with how much they learnt from the day and how much they enjoyed it.  It was a great opportunity to see the ability and ideas of Liskeard School and Community College’s students and how fantastically well they work together. They all certainly demonstrated the values of the co-operative
