A visiting media company came to Liskeard School for two hour sessions conducted on a specially designed BBC media bus. The bus was equipped with a recording studio and classroom to enable pupils to script and digitally record a radio commercial.

The theme of the commercial was Fair-trade and the values and principles of the Co-operatives. With Liskeard School becoming part of the Liskeard Learning Co-opertive Trust it showed students the importance and value of such a status.

The adverts were scripted on ipads before working in teams to record their commercial in the studio. Following the commercial they learned valuable skills involved in digital editing and commercial broadcasting.

The following is a report by Jenni Sayles and Sam Stone:

On the media bus we learnt all different aspects of fair trade. We also learnt the benefits of being part of the co-operative organisation. Together we discussed how fair trade helps provide money to people in third world countries.

In groups we wrote our advert ideas on iPads. We tried to think of original ideas to make our advert interesting. We went to record them in a quieter part of the bus then added music to the background to make them sound professional. The best advert won a prize including a co-op wrist band with UK top 40 songs on it.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves throughout the session; it was fun and very educational! We would love to do something like this again. All the team were really friendly and helpful. We now appreciate what being a co-operative school means.
